Artists in Action was created in 2009 as a virtual venue for artists to experiment with new work, share their stories, and connect with audiences and colleagues in the Iowa City community and around the country. The idea came about when playwrights and performers Jennifer Fawcett, Sean Lewis, and Martin Andrews decided to make Iowa City their artistic home base. After forming Working Group Theatre, they began to search for outlets for their work and ways to connect with local artists. After an email to KRUI’s directors, Artists in Action became a reality.
AIA is still evolving. We have experimented with formats and styles during our first season on air. Through this experimentation we came up with our Artists in Residence project. AIA is committed to this aspect of our show, one that creates a strong bond between AIA and a roster of artists who use the show as platform to experiment with new work. In the future we hope we can feature a new song, radio essay, poem, or any other audio-formatted piece every week on the show. To find out more visit our Artist in Residence page or email us.
