Walking the Wire

We started off this week's show with a visit by director Ron Clark, who joined us to talk about Riverside Theatre's next show, Walking the Wire.  We got a sneak peek at three of the twelve monologues that will make up this year's show:  "Thanksgiving Dinner with the Last Whore in Calhoun County" by Steven Hunt, performed by Tim Budd; “A Declaration of Independence on Surf Avenue", by Carrie Lee O’Dell and performed by Jessica Wilson; and “Holiday Transformation", written and performed by Janet Schlapkohl. Walking the Wire runs November 19-22 at Riverside Theatre.

Resident Artist, Sean Christopher Lewis has spent the past two months in a small town in south east Kansas on a Playwriting Fellowship.  As part of this Fellowship, he has been living in the boyhood home of famous American playwright, William Inge, and teaching at two of the local schools.  This is the first in a series of radio essays he's created about his experiences teaching some very unique students and living in this tiny town that's home to 51 churches, the Neewollah Queen (that's Halloween spelled backwards) and Christian Karate

As part of our ongoing series of interviews with writers in the International Writing Program, we were thrilled to have Jamaican poet Millicent Graham join us in the studio a few weeks ago to talk about her work and read some poems from her new collection The Damp in Things, published by Peepal Tree Press in 2009.  Millicent is the recipient of two Calabash International Literary Festival Scholarships, as well as the 2004 Jamaica Observers Annual Literary Award for Poetry.  Her work has been published in The Caribbean Writer Volume 17; Bearing Witness, and Calabash: A Journal of Caribbean Arts and Letter.
